Small Western Europe Country – Luxembourg
This small Western European country, Luxembourg, gained its independence in 1867. Due to the historical heritage, citizens in Luxembourg have high trilingual ability while the nation has the highest percentage of foreigners among all EU countries. With the small size, the country actually developed into a cosmopolitan itself.
The capital, Luxembourg-Ville, owns 2 different areas, one is the old center, an UNESCO World Heritage Site while another area is the modern downtown of international finance business hub.
Old Center
The old center of Luxembourg nowadays is still quite properly reserved. As an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old center comprises of fortress towers, turrets and winding cobblestone streets.
The Casemates
The casemates located in the old center are a chain of defensive passageways underground that Luxembourg has built since 1644 when the country is under domination of Spain. The Casemates has made Luxembourg renowned of its military power, nicknamed as ‘Gibraltar of the North’.
The underground tunnels were further extended in the 18th century by French and then Austrian. The tunnels go as deep as 40 meters underground. It is opened for public visit since 1933.
Palais Grand Ducal
The Grand Ducal Palace was the official residence of the Grand Duke. Constructed between 1572 & 1574, the town hall was decorated in Spanish Renaissance style. Watch the changing guard in the palace. The opening time for public is from 15 July to 2 September every year.
Notre Dame Cathedral
Built between 1613 and 1621, this magnificent 17th century Gothic cathedral comprises of the royal family vault and a considerable treasury, which can be shown to visitors on request. Every year of the 5th Sunday after Easter would the event ‘Octave of Our Lady’ taking place in Notre Dame Cathedral.
Other attractions that worth visiting in the old center area are the Place Guillaume, also known as Knuedler; the National Museum of Art and History & the Market at Place Guillaume which is opened on Wednesday and Saturday every week.
Besides the old town center, take a look at the modern district on the Plâteau du Kirchberg via the capital’s most impressive bridge – Pont Grand Duchesse Charlotte. You can find large shopping malls, trendy shops and huge cinema complex there.
