Local Tips for Travelling in France
French is renowned as a unique cultural group. Being unique has nothing negative about it. However, before you pay your visit to France, it is always good to get yourself prepare with some local behaviors.
1. The language
The myth that ‘French people do not speak English to you even they do speak perfect English’ is not so valid anymore. If you are visiting Paris or other more touristic places, for sure everybody can speak English quite fluently with you.
I did bump into people who really cannot speak English. It was on a train going to Nancy, a city in located in the Northeastern part of France. Nevertheless, people are still friendly and willing to communicate with the aid of body language with non-locals.
2. The French men
This tip is especially provided for ladies. If you are travelling alone or in female-only groups, watch out for guys following you and keep talking to you. French guys are one of the flirtiest racial next to Italian and Spanish. Most of them are ‘harmless’ and ‘just-for-fun’ though. Just avoid them if you feel really uncomfortable or threatened.
I’ve seen a local girl cycling without umbrella under pouring rain. Guys along side the road just started cheering as the girl’s top turned half transparent by rainwater.
3. Local way of using Metro
Don’t get me wrong, the below behavior only applies to a certain group of locals. Nevertheless, it is not so difficult to witness. In any metro stations in Paris, you will be able to see people jumping across gates, following or pushing somebody through the gate in order to get in without paying… any other ways to get into the metro for free, you name it.
Lastly, don’t be surprise if you notice that the staffs in the station are not even attempting to do anything when they see this. It’s just part of their metro culture.
